in order to give ur folder or file a security feature ,u need to have ntfs partition , this security feature is not available for fat file systems

fisrst thing is that u convert ur drive filesytem to ntfs ,this u can do without formatting u can keep ur data intact

►run->cmd
►convert :/fs :ntfs
for eg: convert c: /fs ntfs(drive name is the drive u want convert to ntfs from fat )
►then restrat the system while after the disk check it will convert the filesystem while in dos mode dont wrrd abt it after 100% is complete os gets loaded u can see that all ur files are in tact
and u can notice that drive has got converted into ntfs

► right click on folder or file « properties then implement whatever securuty feature u want to

§ note : if u find confused with the command not to wrry on the command prompt
type convert /?
help menu will be displayed with all the options

The posts which I've seen till now are all right, except the first answer. After converting to NTFS, please don't use the native windows protection to apply a password to your folder or files. In case you reinstall windows, even without formatting, kiss your folder/files goodbye as you will never be able to recover them, until and unless you have saved the private and public key seperately.

Hope this helps.

You can use the Convert.exe command which will convert a FAT system to NTFS. This cannot be changed back so easily and don't listen to the first answer you do not have to format your hard drive, that person does not know what they are talking about at all!

Sorry to say but you dont have to follow the above procedure.
Just go to command prompt and type as following
Write in c: drive or your root drive as following
c:>help convert
it will give you options to convert various files or folders or even a drive to be converted from FAT to NTFS
If you still dont know what to do
Then convert the whole drive in which the whole folder is present .
By typing the following in command prompt
C:>convert drivename
eg.
c:>d:
for converting d drive to NTFS

FAT and NTFS are file systems and your hard drive is formatted based on the FAT file system. NTFS is the latest file system out there (NTFS = New Technology File System) and the only way to change your file system from FAT to NTFS is to format your hard drive or partition, which means losing all your information on that drive or partition.
