I need something relatively cheap without a whole bunch of sawing involved. Preferably adjustable but not necessary.

I do most of my work on the computer. It's the digital age. Just kidding.

I have a drafting table at home. It is made out of an old 3'x5' countertop that a restaurant was going to throw out. But it good shape. They were just remodeling. I have a parallel bar. Actually two. One 4' bar (the extra foot is nice, I keep holders for pens, markers, etc when not tilted up) on the countertop which a made a frame for, and smaller 3' on a 2x3 board. Nice for working on smaller drawings and portable. Get a mat from a art supply store, they are green on side and white on the side. I prefer the green side up, for contrast against white paper, especially when you have an overlay.

The frame for the countertop is scrap lumber, really simple, box with legs. You can get some hinges for the front, attach some support rods on the back, when you pull the back up it latches.

No reason to spend a lot of money on it. If you can find an old countertop. I like the countertop, because it is laminate on particle board. Won't warp or twist. It is heavy and sturdy. But definitely need the mat.

Good luck

Along with stone, mud and animal parts, wood was one of the first materials worked by early humans. Microwear analysis of the Mousterian stone tools used by the Neanderthals show that many were used to work wood. The development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials.
