It is a challenge to your sense of perception and analytical analysis to follow the story, pick up on clues and hear people say things by which they incriminate themselves if not immediately, it will incriminate them as things unfold.

It is sort of like solving a crossword puzzle when you sort of get into the author's mind and figure out where he is going.

The thrill for a large part of it. And I always feel really good about myself if I figure it out (I feel like I could be a detective--especially if I figure it out before the detective does)--its a big puzzle game only better because its a story.
One detective TV show that I watch without getting nightmares is Monk. It's funny and fun to figure out. That's one I'd recommend to anyone. And have you ever done your own mystery dinner? Those are fun and definitely worth it (though they're risque fairly often). I don't think you'd get nightmares from most of those, since they're usually funny and there isn't any visual stimuli or blood and gore.

because it stimulates the brain and there is personal satisfaction in being correct. why should a mystery give you nightmares?
