I am 22, about to graduate college, and I'm looking into different careers. I am smart and can talk to people but I wouldn't call myself outgoing in any sense of the word. Can I still be successful in sales or will the outgoing people have the edge? Is the salesman stereotype true in the sales world? If anyone has real-world experience, their input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I am a 5/11 blonde hair blue eyes woman....I am an introvert....I was picked up by a modelin agancey a major one....in New York City and had to drop out of modeling because I was just NOt comfortable flaunting myself and it felt fake....I married a guy who manages a car auction and I worked there part time selling warranties....I was the best sales person there and made quite a bit of money..basically I worked 2 auctions a week and each lasted about 4 hours. I got $80 per auction and then I got $50 for every warranty I sold....I was walking out making $600-700 paychecks some weeks for working only 8 hours a week. How did I do it? Im not a grease monkey I dont know cars but I knew my PRODUCT and that is what sales is about..if you know your product, are a student of human behavior you can do really really well in sales. I am a travel agent now and I make very good money upwards of 60k a year and I am 100% commission based....and still an introvert.....but I know my clientele and my product.....thats what its all about...You can do great in sales!

You dont have to be real out going just a good communicater and listener. I have made tons of money and am not really out going. I have thick skin and am not affraid of the answer "No" in my book no means "Yes" sometimes maybe. Don't be afraid to try new things to get in the door. Its not an easy career and takes sometime to establish youself but once you have you can make a ton of money. There is a book by Brian Tracy called Sales Magic. He talks about how to sell anyone. Another great book is 12.5 Principles of sales Greatness- this is a quick read I would start with that. If you like people you will do well! Good luck to you!!

I have been in sales of one form or another most of my life. Being outgoing is an asset, but I believe that if you know and understand your product, you are neat, friendly and polite, you will do better than the stereotype salesperson you are envisioning. The key to sales is to show others how your particular product can fulfill their need. That is why it is important to understand and believe in your product. You also might be surprised at how outgoing you become once you've made a few sales and you can tell the customer really liked you. Practice and experience make the job easier and easier.
You also want to consider where you are working. If the sales consultants are super competitive and loud, you might want to choose somewhere else.
If you work for yourself, you will earn a far more lucrative income.

Salesmen have a reputation of being charlatans. Just as long you an expert and ask the right questions, you will be ok. Listen to what the other person is telling you, that is why you were given two ears and one mouth. Good luck
