If you are not in the United States legally, then you cannot obtain a social security number. However, you may obtain an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a tax processing number issued by the Internal Revenue Service. It is a nine-digit number that always begins with the number 9 and has a 7 or 8 in the fourth digit, example 9XX-7X-XXXX.
IRS issues ITINs to individuals who are required to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number but who do not have, and are not eligible to obtain a Social Security Number (SSN) from the Social Security Administration (SSA).
ITINs are issued regardless of immigration status because both resident and nonresident aliens may have U.S. tax return and payment responsibilities under the Internal Revenue Code.

See the IRS website for more details. http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=96287,00.html#itin

You may wish to seek the advice of a lawyer in your area.

Good luck!

Temo, you need to convince your parents to consult a lawyer. Your family can become citizens. It is not a fast process and it can be frustrating. A lawyer can help you immensely though.

And there are some places where you can get legal help like this for very low fees (or none in some cases).

Start investigating. And don't let the abusive ones get to you. Most Americans are not like that.

Or go back to where you came from? Why would you say that to a young person?
Ever thought about what socio-economic conditions would have made his family flee here to a hostile place? Things must have been pretty bad for him to leave his native country and come here.

Call a non-profit organization that helps their clients secure legal paperwork, it might take a long time though.

....if you are not legal, and your in school, your gonna get caught bro. Watch your back, if you are not legal, you are not a citizen, you can not have some benefits of citizens. HANDS DOWN. There is no way, even through the underground, that you can get one.

Do it the honest way and apply for citizenship. It may take a little longer, but at least the end result wont be as bad as having done it the illegal way.
