Can you stall your large horse, or pen him (or her?) up, and grain him before you take your mini out for a ride? I'm thinking that if you distract him with grain, and keep what you're doing with the mini out of his view and hearing, it would probably make it easier on him. In a stall, with a radio playing nearby would be ideal.

Another option that you might try: if you have an experienced friend who could help you out during your ride, ask if they would keep him busy by grooming, bathing, exercising him. If he begins to act up, they can correct him, get his attention and continue with whatever activity they've chosen to do.

He's got to learn that he can be happy even if the mini isn't there with him. Sounds like he's a little obsessed! They are social animals, after all, and hate for the herd to be scattered.

But, if he's to the point of getting physically out of control when mini is out of sight, then his behavior needs to be corrected/modified before he hurts himself, or someone else.

If it's just a matter of him running the fenceline and nickering after her, pacing until she comes back, then it's not too big of a problem... lots of patience on your part, and consistent correction should bring about an improvement in his behavior.

Good luck, and e-mail me if you think I can help you further, maybe recommending some reading material.

:D

All horses have some kind of dependency on other horses. Your large horse is the dominant horse. And he feels like he needs to have some one to be dominant over and he doesn't know what to do with himself. But the mini doesn't need him in the same way. I would work on exercises separating them for short periods of time. Just walk the mini away or the big horse, then bring them back. Making the distance you go away farther when your big horse is calm with it. Soon he will realize he won't die when the mini leaves. This might take months.

Horses are very much social animals.. herd animals in fact.. they get ver much use to other horses and people... and they have a pecking order.. sounds like yours is the dominant... and if thats true they feel its thier job to be protective of the others... Hell the one I have here goes nuts when the farrier shows up to trim the hooves on the one on the next property LOL (really.. psycho nuts)
