I just opened MSN front page...I've been hearing about this little polar bear in Germany whose mother abandoned him, and animal rights activists are saying that the zoo is wrong for intervening and keeping him alive. I think that is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. My opinion on the matter is this: if it's wrong to abandon a human baby and let it die, shouldn't it be wrong to do the same to a baby polar bear? Some animal rights activist. I am glad that the zoo kept the darling baby alive...it is leading a happy life, from what I have seen. Sorry to ramble on, but don't you agree?? Opinions??

I don't know the full argument of the animal rights activists - I expect that it hasn't been fully covered by the media apart from the headline grabbing aspect - but with all the problems facing the polar bear species today, I just don't understand how killing the little bear will help the situation. The species is under enough threat as it is. It wasn't born in the wild was it?

I think the activists in this case--and I'm not defending them--are saying that condemning this bear to a life totally dependent on humans is going to be no different than what happened to Kieko (the whale from "Free Willie" fame) who could never return to the wild because he was so attached to humans. The thinking is that a death now would be better than having an animal that could never be in its own environment--ever. It all comes down to the zoo argument: are they or are they not good for animals.

Well the bear will die any ways if mother abandoned him. These freaks will probably complain they aren't doing enough if the zoo didn't pick him up and let him die in wild. Lot of activists do have just mad schezophrenic opinions. It's like trying get your 1 month old baby to stop crying at night.

He isn't going to be put to death!! They will keep him in the zoo and take care of him, besides reading where male Polar Bears are loners anyway in the wild...

Knut should be "sold" in an international auction for zoo's only. The highest bidder may have to have him while the money should be offered to some animal protection organization.
