Eragon and Eldest. Just spent about 99% of my day sitting on a couch reading Eldest (Big Book). It has a lot of interesting twists and when you get to certian parts you will go, "OMG, NOOO!!!" or even "HOW COULD HE!" and possibley "I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS!" Or you might be like me and run around the house screaming in outrage. Eragon and Eldest are awesome books and have something unique from other fictional books. Imagine the star wars government and the wars, it is pretty complicated, and personally, for me, hard to understand. In Eragon and Eldest, there are several races important to the book. Humans, Elves, Dwarves, Urgals, and Ra'zacs. Each race has its own government system, and special way of thinking. For example, Humans do whatever they can to survive, obviously, which includes hunting for food. Elves, on the other hand, are repulsed by eating meat because they know it came from a living magical thing and there was no reason to kill it, so it is like murder. The elves do not believe in any god(s), but they believe in logic and the author makes a good point of that in the story. The dwarves live underground and work with rock, and have clans, and believe in many gods. The Urgals are often fierce creatures with horns and some stand 8 feet tall. They kill for pleasure, but are essential in parts of the story. The Ra'Zacs are very must a mystery, but they are definetly not human. The young ones (20 years or below of age) wear black robes with hoods to cover up their beaks and horrible faces. They feast on flesh and bone marrow. The adults have massive wings and a small ability to do magic. They have amazing speed and a sense of smell. Anyway, it is a really fantastic series of books with the 3rd and last one coming out in late 2007 or early 2008. I hope you read it :).
Also read:
-Journey to the River Sea (around 200 pages, adventure)
-The City Of Ember (around 200 pages, adventure/mystery)
-Drums, Girls, And Dangerous Pie (THIS ONE WILL MAKE YOU CRY LIKE A LITTLE GIRL! BEWARE! But it is a touching book and really great :D)
-Which Witch? By Eva Ibbotson, one of my fav authors
-The Star of Kazan By Eva Ibbotson, one of my fav authors
And definetly anything by Sharon Creech! Good luck and happy reading!
-Silver Tipped Wings
