Im not exactly sure what words are age appropriate. What words are to easy and what words are to hard.

Check out the site below... there are several pdf's here from a recent spelling bee our kids were in. The word groups are seperated by grade and they are in pdf format so if you have adobe they should be easy to save and print.

Is the boy reading? If so the words he cannot read in the book are the ones good to use for study. Test on the easy words and see how he does. Add some more difficult ones the next week. Study words that can be sounded out phonetically AND words that have to be learned by sight.
Compound words can be learned at this age.
Like windmill, or bluebird and fireplace.
The librarian at your public library would be a terrific help in this area. There are many books that can help you. Free.
My experience with librarians has been very positive, they enjoy helping.

Teachers.org and teachers.net are 2 great website teachers use. You can find what you need since everything is split up by grade level.

Also, you can buy grade level appropriate phonics and spelling books from Sam's Club and places like Office Max. There are also stores for teachers in most states for you to buy materials.

Words that are easy are those which are phonetically spelled, like hat. Chose ones that the child may use in his writing, and do not follow simple phonetic rules...because, through, receive...

I really like the curriculum spelling power. You can use it from the third grade through the twelth and beyond!!! You can use it with all your children if you have more than one. It is a great investment.
