Pretty smart people in this thread. The only way to beat them is to walk away. In this you win.

They respond to attention and praises.

The thing about sociopaths is that they don't think the things they do are games. They truly believe them. What "kind" of sociopath do you refer to? Because I've known people that have been wonderful people in their "normal" life, yet would be considered "sociopaths" otherwise. Just because someone is fake, or believes their own lies, or acts one way or the other, doesn't necessarily mean they are sociopaths. For instance, a person pretending to be drunk when they really were drinking kool-aid because they didn't know it was switched, is not necessarily a sociopath, they just want attention. Big difference. Specify your question, it'll be easier to give a correct answer.

Don't get involved in their game. They will only respond to their own kind. They like the way they think. So, if you become friends with a sociopath, you are either one or will become a victim of one. That's only if you can figure out if they are one.

I don't think you can. Sociopaths are willing to go to extremes (sometimes even murder) to get to play their own games and win. The only thing you can do is get far, far away and cut all contact. Unless you want to become a sociopath yourself.

If you cut contact, but they are still bugging you, all you can do is record it, and talk to the police or a lawyer to see if you've got a case against them. But be careful -- they don't like that, and may up the ante quite suddenly and violently.

Sociopaths are dangerous and in order to minimize the pain in your life, you should steer clear of them.

However, I did meet one and didn't know it. By the time he forged my checks, I felt I had to fight back. I did things a conservative would do without knowing any better. I distributed a flyer warning the residents about this criminal. I made sure the DA filed at least two felony charges, so that one charge would stick in the plea bargain. I located the felon and got the police to arrest him. I called his father and told him that the excuse I was given for not getting my money back was that he had suddenly died. I spoke at the sentencing about all of the illegal and immoral things he did of which the judge was unaware. He got ten days in jail.

In retrospect, I think sociopaths ruin their own lives and don't need us spending our valuable time making sure they get what they deserve.

You cannot beat a real sociopath. They have no conscience and they blame you anyway, whether you want them to or not. If they are a real and true sociopath you have to cut them out of your life. But you cannot make them care or accept the blame for it.

you cannot beat a sociopath at their own game. they are proficient at what they do, and masters at their game. the only way to beat one is to somehow play the card that will make them become accountable for their actions.

By pretending not to know that they're a sociopath.

A sociopath has no conscience.
The only thing they will rationalize is punishment as a consequence for what is done.

Turn your back on them - that is the one thing that will drive them crazy. You cannot beat them at their own game unless you don't have a conscience either. They will take them self down on their own.
