What a nice friend you are!

A nice tupperware-type bin that is kind of see-through, with a shelf in it for small items. You can stock it with anything that you find in the notions section that strikes your fancy....a couple of pretty pincushions, tape measure, buttons, a few yards of trims, anything that you think would spark her creativity. Other nice things to have on hand are a package of iron-on interfacing and/or fusible webbing, some velcro, different types of pins for different fabrics like silk, et cetera (it will say on the package) maybe a 6-inch ruler.

My mother in law likes to go to antique stores and pick up old spools of ribbon, thimbles, and buttons for me. They're not expensive and they are really special.

As a fashion designer the best thing for a beginer sewer is the "VOGUE sewing book" It litereally has everything you need to know about sewing, tools and how - to for problem solving. Best book ever....... NOTE: there is no difference between the original (OLD) book and revised additions except updated pictures (I know this because I own 2 and old and new one). The information is the same...... You may be able to find one quite cheap at a used book store. This is the ONE AND ONLY SEWING BOOK YOU WILL EVER NEED.

I have found the best storage box for threads is the one I bought my son for his hot wheel cars. It holds about 20 on each side. Look in the toy section for this, then take it to the fabric section (I shop at Walmart) see if a spool of thread fits in. If it does then buy a few spools of thread to go in the box. Along with the other suggestions you should be able to put together things your friend never would think of till she NEEDS them.
