Gay couples are similar to straight couples in almost every way. The lack of an established societal infrastructure creates stress for some couples, but these couples will overcome this, if they create they our support and social circles. This is difficult in rural areas.

The lack of a durable legal framework that protects and recognizes the rights of gay couples is probably the biggest threat. Most gay couples survive and thrive 'in spite' of a legal system which is usually antagonistic of opposed to their family's survival.

Some couples with severe disparities are particularly vulnerable to the lack of external repsect or support. For example, sero-diverse couple (one is HIV+, one is HIV-) have trouble with insurance issues and stigma.

Bi-national couples might face deportation and threats at work, without the right to share immigration benefits via marriage, etc.

I think you probably know that there is no ONE answer to this question. The only way to find out would be to do a world-wide survey. And even THEN you'd have to assume that they'd all be telling the truth.
