The North was also able to execute its four-pronged attack plan, though the capture of Richmond took longer than expected due to the ineptitude of Northern generals in the East, especially in the face of Robert E. Lee. Otherwise, their plans to blockade the South, divide it east-to-west (the campaigns in the Mississippi Valley) and divide it north-to-south (Sherman's March Through Atlanta and to The Sea) were executed almost flawlessly.
