My 1/2 duplex was originally built to be one suite. It is now two and thus has NO soundproofing. I can hear the neighbors alarm clock! They can hear mine. I can hear their t.v. channel and their arguements.. often word for word. My concern is that I am having a baby in a few months. The neighbors can even hear my baby's heartbeat when I listen on my machine! That is not loud at all. They say the porch door in my enterance echos in their place. I am in the basement and it is cold. I turn the heat on, and they complain that they sweat and open their windows in a Canadian winter. These neighbors are moving this week. I don't know who will my new neighbors will be. But my newborn will cry and wake up at night.. they will hear everything... I don't want to be tense with my baby crying and being more uncomfortable in my home then I was with these neighbors.. WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

i am a single mom and would move when my lease is up with a newborn baby and a 7 year old. I love my location now

Can you ask the owner to put in some soundproofing or insulation? It may be a building code violation if you and your neighbors can hear each other that much. If the owner won't fix the problem, you will have to see what your new neighbors are like before you decide, I guess. Good luck to you.

I would put a radio on when the child cries, on a soft station, but loud enough to let the neighbors know you are trying.
Keep that calm station on so that you can drown out their noises.
You may have to talk to them and explain the wall installation thing.
Hope your baby is a sound sleeper...all night long!

If you really love it there then stay! You can help minimize the sounds by putting up blankets on the walls.. Thats a cheap alternative to moving.. Works with musicians....Hmmmm Me thinks a new floor with insulation under it is in order for the upstairs.. And yes , talk to the landlord...

The best thing that I can think of, is, to contact the owner of this problem and explain how the building is not very private and for him/her to see about sound-proofing both. Also, explain the benfits of remodeling - no more complaints, as I am sure the previous people did.
Good Luck...
