Could be the ECU's engine temp sensor as well, or one of the other many sensors that cars have now. If the ECU thinks the engine is cold, it will dump more gas in.

What year? From 1996 and on, the car has OBDII, so get it read for fail codes if this is the case.

Your engine will idle faster and run like crap especially a 1.5l Get an aerosol can of carb cleaner and spray it around the intake manifold until it smooths out for a second or 2 and there is your leak

One area a vacuum leak can cause high gas use is the fuel pressure regulator. When the diaphragm fails you suck gas through the regulator into the vacuum line.

Engine will run lean and idle rough. Hook up a vacuum gage and you should have 18-20 inches of vacuum. If not you may have a leak or a mechanical problem.

If it does not idle well you probably have a parcially plugged fuel filter and a vacuum leak.Check all vacuum hoses very carefully and repair.Check engine codes.
