I guess crime DOES pay after all, because most bussineses don't pay for those things.

The health care in the prisons is often substandard run buy private companies only out to make profits. While many people benefit monetarily from the cheap labor contracted to some of the prisons. Crime does pay very well for those who have turned it into a business companies like Keefe make millions from selling cheap generic foods to prisons. Its no accident that most prisons are placed in towns with poor economies. All the money being made off prisons why not give some to the victims or put it into drug treatment centers

Just because we afford medical treatment to our prisoners, it doesn't mean they are getting the best of care. I'll bet you still wouldn't want to trade places with a prisoner, would you?

I believe we owe prisoners 3 basic things:

1. Personal safety. To minimize interaction with other dangerous criminals, I think they should all be housed 1 inmate to a cell (it need not be spacious or luxurious), and they should be locked down 23 hours a day, released only for meals/showers, etc...

2. Sanitary conditions. This means clean facilities, and food and water which are safe (need not be particularly good tasting though.

3. Basic medical care for painful or life-threatening illness or injuries. We shouldn't pay for a nose job or a tummy tuck..but a broken bone, appendicitis, heart attack...these things should be treated.

That's all.

We don't owe them television, work out equipment, radios, or air conditioning. Prison should be undesirable. Inmates should not be able to fraternize with their "colleagues" in order to perfect their craft. If the food is healthy but bland, that's perfect! One more reason to obey the law and not get arrested.

But, since we, as a society, are meting out a consequence, we do owe them just these basics, nothing more.

Good Luck!

How else do you think they could have medical, dental and education?

The jobs they make available for prisoners to work pay less than $1 per hour. Just enough so the prisoner can buy a few things at the prison store.

As far as health care is concerned, the state is responsible for the well-being of the prison population. Lack of medical treatment would be cruel and unusual punishment. A person who is in prison for posession of a controlled substance doesn't deserve to get, in affect, a death sentence because the state won't allow for health care while in prison.

Education is part of the rehabilitation process of the prisoners. It is a step toward building a better life -- one that does not revolve around crime

if you think that crime doesn't pay. then you are so wrong.
if you think that just because a prisoner gets dental and medical paid for that they go there just so they can have those things? you are totally insane.
so if that being the case, why don't you go? heck, you will get free medial (if youwant to call it that_) free dental ( no pain med's by the way) you get you teeth pulled with out that. and free eye doctor(ever seen what prisoners wear for glasses>?_
you are so against prisoners, or are you just against the fact that only bad and criminals go to prison?
so they don't deserve to be treated with medical or dental or anything of that nature,
well put it this way... prisoners are not always really bad people. some end up there because of addiction cause society won't help them. so the next best thing is lock em up in prison.
another thing. sure criminals go to prison. but some people can change their ways and straighten their lives up..
or are you thinking that once a criminal always a criminal?

aids, hep c. among other things are contagious. so you think that they shouldn't get medical treatment? because they are in prison? so its ok to spread this disease among other prisoners. so when they do get out they can spread it to you too.
you are so discriminatory, I suppose you are against black people too. just because you seem to be that kind of person from reading you post. sad to think that people are like you.

The medical part is easy. You can't leave someone sick especially if they are in a population of other people like that. No it is not fair that some people have to bust their a$$ to pay for school, and criminals get it for free however I will take having to pay for everything myself over jail any day.

not to mention if healthcare was not provided everyone and their mom would sue the state

To not provide prisoners with basic health services necessary for survival is cruel and unusual punishment and violates the Eighth Amendment. As you may be aware, the government is not allowed to violate the Constitution.

I have a feeling that those things you mention don't make it worth going to jail for.
To answer your question it probably makes jail easier for the people who have to work there and for the lawyers and policemen who have to deal with inmates if they have some basic human needs met. Also, those crazy bleeding hearts who crafted the document from which we base our laws, put in an amendment restricting 'cruel and unusual punishment.'
Don't worry, less than 1 percent of Americans are in jail and the taxes you spend on them is much less than the taxes that subsidize oil and other industries.
