It has software in the ECU designed that way. It gets the info from the VSS, Vehicle Speed Sensor, and kicks the engine off at a predetermined speed.

This is done to prevent a person from driving a vehicle too fast that wasn't designed to go at that speed, say for instance a large pickup truck with little aerodynamic and handling qualities.

Yeah if you want to change that you need to modify the computer of the car. Honestly I would leave it alone. the hemi was never a high reving motor (They didn't call it the elephant motor because it had lots of power you know). If you change the computer too much you can and will BLOW that 4000 dollar motor right out of the truck. But it's your Truck and your pocket book. Have at it. It's all computer controlled governor wise.

Not knowing the car type, it could be a speed limiter programmed into the car's computer. You would have to get a programmer and raise the high speed limit.

Or did someone install a govenor device on the car, like your father? If so, then who knows what he did.

Yes it is called a govenor or however its spelled. Some power programers can raise or get rid of this, other than that i dont know. Its there to keep you safe, and to stop you from damaging the car.

Did someone put a 'govner' or 'govenor' (not sure of spelling) in the engine? My dad wanted to do this to the snowmobile when I was a kid. I imagine it can be removed by a mechanic. What type of vehicle are you wondering about?

I had the same problem on my car but to my surprise the problem was a failing fuel pump. it was not yet completely gone so it did provide enough gas for normal speeds. after replacing it I got all my speed and power back again.

It's the stupid switch. It stops stupid people from driving faster than they have the skills for. Also know as the idiot switch, because only an idiot would go that fast without proper training.
