I'm an artist, or was at least. For over a year now I've been suffering from a severe case of artist block.

I think its because, I'm too critical of myself, and think I have to draw perfectly every time no doodles. I have to be perfect. Help me I want art to be fun again :(

"ART IS KNOWING WHICH MISTAKES TO KEEP."

i have the same problem. it helps me to draw insanely bad or weird drawings, or whatever comes into my head. try experimenting with paint, too. try even getting back to the basics, do simple exercises, or even try finger painting. dont be concerned with it being something, just enjoy THE PROCESS OF DOING. art is not all about making something acsthetically pleasing, a lot has to do with the idea and pleasure you derive from it.

I have the same problem. I'm not sure it really lays in criticism of ourselves, possibly perfection but the life we lead is so busy and so stressful, we have a tendency to think to much about it. I do the same thing. I try to come up with all sorts of paining projects, then get frustrated because either I'm in the middle of doing something else, or just can't be creative enough. What I have found out is that the less pressure I place on myself to be creative, the better something comes about. Try this: keep a small notebook never to your bed, or a sketch pad. Sometimes in the middle of the night, I'll have an idea and just jot it down. Some nights, I'll just wake up and sketch without thinking about it. I found some of the more amazing creative things come to life on paper when I don't actually think about it.

It is time for change!

Change your technical habit and routine. Try to focus on philosophies and ideas! Don't focus on how real you can make it look. Let go, and just know that it does not matter what it looks like, it's you. You have no mistakes. Perfect is to have mistakes. Try closing your eyes and let you arm move to music! Let emotions flow out instead of worring what your are drawing. You'll be more at peace within.

Most artists stay in the same groove for afew years, then totally change to something new. Change is the key!

I love art and do well myself. for me, i really have to feel the art coursing through my veins. i like to set aside time when there can be nothing else to bother me and put myself into a DRAWING ENVIRONMENT. this env is different for everyone. find a place or somewhere that is peaceful and you like. concentrate and let nothing else bother you. sometimes, i go into a trance like state. another thing that may help, if you ever have to put a drawing down, cover it up and don't lock your eyes on it or you might have issues with your mind bending its appearance.
i have taught many others that in order to finess the talent, you must first learn to accept and feel what you can do. get a good grasp on it then try doing something new. stay calm, and don't ever just draw to draw or paint to paint. it hast to be done with feeling and it must mean something to you.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with being a perfectionist. Some of the greatest artists focused on perfectionism because it too can be considered an art.

The nature of how an artist can stay in touch with, or connected to the greater beauty of all things doesn't always lead to the inspiration of photo-realistic works. Don't over analyze. Accept wild passions, then create.

I am going through the exact same thing and didn't know what to do until just now. Submit/display some of your work for the public to view and comment upon. I think that praise from others might encourage and motivate you. Hey, maybe put one of your drawings as your profile pic here on yahoo...? I think I am going to...I'd love to see yours too! Good luck!

Dont try to be critical of yourself. Just keep on going cause thats how you will learn things. Also, try to think of something you like. Make this your theme for all your art works. From there expand, eventually youll get tired of that theme and then your going to decide to change.
