The lighting or way the video looks in movies like "The 10th Kingdom" or TV shows by the BBC have a different look to them than then average show on TV or DVD...is there a reason for this or am I imagining things?

You are not imagining this. You hit it with the lighting, the choice of recording medium (film, tape, etc.), and more. Individuals make a TV show or movie, but individuals are influenced by the "culture" of the larger society, be it as large as, say the U.S. or the U.K., or as small as Hallmark Productions. Those cultures impart their characteristics to the moviemakers.

I can always spot Canadian productions, too.
