The fact is that the media use "big lies" to convince the American public because they know they work. The public cannot believe that what the newspaper is saying would be a gross lie because a newspaper wouldn't do such a thing. So they force themselves to believe that anything that is printed in the paper or shown on TV must be the truth.
You can smear anyone's reputation if you control the media.
