An excellent question. Perhaps it's a bit like going to court. There you are asking a disinterested third party to adjudicate a question. If you ask someone you know, presumably a friend or family member, their answer is probably going to be couched in terms they know will not offend you. So consider Yahoo Answers a huge court room.

Sometimes I think it's because we may already have an answer in our head but we just want to verify that how we're thinking is right, or at least "normal" and you know that's easier with strangers.
