Myths can be symbolic of real events and they can also symbolize ideas, philosophies and social concepts.
They also address human psychology, and the inner aspects of humanity.

Some gods liked to interfere with daily life. There were personal relationships with Gods. Also, there were many other super natural figures that were not gods, like creatures, Minotaur, mystical beings, Muses etc. Each city had gods that they honoured like Athena in Athens. Think of it as patron saints.
