All myths address the esoteric aspects of nature,,,the nature of the world and the nature of humans - the macro cosmos and the micro cosmos.
As to the 'creation' of the outer world - the best known of these is the 'Olympian' creation myth - Chaos , Gaea, Cronus , Rhea , Zeus etc.....
Myths can be symbolic of real events and they can also symbolize ideas, philosophies and social concepts.
They also address human psychology, and the inner aspects of humanity.

Polythesist society with believe that the Gods had direct impact on day to day life. They believed that many gods breed with humans to create demi-gods like Hercules. Some gods liked to interfere with daily life. There were personal relationships with Gods. Also, there were many other super natural figures that were not gods, like creatures, Minotaur, mystical beings, Muses etc. Each city had gods that they honoured like Athena in Athens. Think of it as patron saints.

The Gods controlled weather, earth, seas, wars, marriage, death, love, beauty... everything.

The gods and goddesses and their stories are parallel to the human consciousness and subconsciousness. They are relative to our minds and are personifications thereof. Read some Carl Jung on this matter. He is a savant in this field.
