The Shiv linga is considered as Maha linga in Hindu shastra.It represents the entity of the Purush and Prakriti,through whose interraction,the universe is born.
The writer and creator of the lingam is Shiva himself.

THERE IS NO CREATER OF SHIV-LING LIKE SEA, SKY, MOUNTAIN ETC..IT IS SELF MAID. YOU KNOW "DWADASH JYORTIRLINGA" ? THEY ARE SELF MAID.AS PHILOSOPHICAL WAY, SHIV LING IS AS A MARK OF "PURUSHA" .
