Hybrids do get better gas mileage but tend to have smaller gas tanks.

The public doesn't understand hybrids, and the media doesn't portray them properly. They are not the godsend that they are sometimes purported to be.

While it is true that hybrids can achieve great mileage, it all depends on your driving habits. If you drive on the highway a lot, hybrids won't help much as they perform best in
Additionally, the EPA is changing the way that cars' gas mileage is being rated. Hybrids' ratings are not going to be as strong as they used to be due to this more realistic rating system.

With the extra cost that comes when buying a hybrid, knowledge of your driving habits is paramount because there's a good chance you'll have to own the car for 5 years to recoup any kind of gas savings. In many cases, it's just not worth it. And no matter what someone tells you, you're not saving the environment.

Please also consider the cost of replacing the batteries, not to mention the impact of the environment of the batteries when they have to be disposed. Do you think it's going to be a good thing?

Buy the car that suits your needs, but think clearly before you make that dive.

i own a shop, and a few of my customers have bought these, and now there wishing they hadn't they don't get the mileage they said they did,and they seem to not be as good as they first thought they would be also, most of the people i know say if the had it to do over again they wouldn't have bought them, and in my opinion,i really don't think there worth it either,I'm not impressed with them at all,and so is a lot of other people, for now if i was buying a new one id buy a regular vehicle until they get all the bugs worked out of these, good luck ,hope this helps.

We bought the Toyota Prius when it FIRST came out (the newer style) and it was about $25K (US) loaded, we think it's VERY worth it. However the same car is now about $30K.

Also, if you drive VERY aggressive like me, then you get about 35-40MPG, my wife gets more like 50MPG.

Finally hybrid aside, it's a great car. Very similar to the Toyota Matrix I had. Good pickup, comfortable, etc.

if you count up the higher purchase price add to that higher maintainence costs and the price of replacement battery pack about( $5000 i'm told)
you may not be saving any money at all.
no one seems to know how long the battery pack will last so if you don't
keep the vehicle too long it won't be a problem

A lot of it would be the amount of distance you drive. If you do a lot of highway driving, then you would be on the engine anyway. I think they are a temporary measure until we can develop a hydrogen powered car and get the infrastructure built to sustain it.
