Can someone explain to me (in simple terms!) what a proxy server is and why my teenage son would be looking up how to set one up/tap into one?

Hmm, I thought it might be something like that . I suppose there are a lot of these proxy servers around ? No hope of getting a tech in to foil this ? It seems it's a losing battle here, huh ? I LOVE computers and modern technology but it sure is a double-edged sword !

Here is the technical definition:
A proxy server is a computer that offers a computer network service to allow clients to make indirect network connections to other network services. A client connects to the proxy server, then requests a connection, file, or other resource available on a different server. The proxy provides the resource either by connecting to the specified server or by serving it from a cache. In some cases, the proxy may alter the client's request or the server's response for various purposes.

What that means in English regarding your son:
You have probably blocked content on the internet so he cant goto certain sites that he really wants to goto, so using a proxy server he will beable to access blocked content because he will go through the proxy server to get to were he wants to go and your computer will only see that he was on the proxy server, not were he really went.

tell your son i'm sorry for telling you this, but a proxy is a website that will allow you to go to any website without following any of the security options. He would be able to go to any restricted or blocked sites that you set. Many use it at school to get past the school firewall. It is also a safe option when using the web because it doesn't allow to download anything. All cookies (Which are files from the website) are blocked which prevents a lot of risks that you take when using the internet. I hope this helps.
