exploited would be the worst - because it messes with TRUST, a volatile emotion .... when trust is robbed, contraction occurs and inhibits further growth potential ....

when we FEEL the 4 others, there are clues for improvement;

unwanted - represents the ego, realignment required
misunderstood - represents communication, improve and develop
unappreciated - self esteem, build some and move on
out of place - misplacement is subjective, as long as I am authentic. I am in the perfect place.

O.K. I feel almost all of these almost all the time. The absolute worst for me is misunderstood. I've been struggling with this for years. I remember asking one of my philosophy instructors about communication. I wanted to know how can we ever really say or know we've communicated effectively, that we are in fact understood, when what we've expressed (verbally and nonverbally) is not always (and I'd argue, rarely) perceived as we intended.

If I got a quarter for every time I've heard, "you really ought to stop thinking so hard," I'd be a very wealthy woman. I responded to my internship supervisor when she said this to me during my mid-term review this week, "Maybe I shouldn't stop thinking so hard; maybe everyone else should start thinking harder!" She just stared, like I slapped her in the face. I kick myself for opening my mouth in class, at work, and even for writing responses here, because my point is missed so often that I don't even want to try anymore. And it's not that I'm inarticulate. As I see it, feeling (being) misunderstood is a catalyst, speeding one toward the experience(s) of being unappreciated, exploited, out of place, and unwanted.

In the end, humans are social animals. Communication is a necessary part of social interaction and, thus, individual and collective health. If part of communication is understanding, then the fabric of human connection tears when there is limited or no understanding. Everything hinges on understanding. Without it, we are all lost.

Unappreciated. This term, in general, has a meaning of not being able to create anything good in or for the world IE being useless. Of course useless is probably a worse term than any of these because it is the most definite...the fact so many people use the term useless and/or unappreciated before committing suicide is no coincidence.

So...why do I believe unappreciative the worst of the terms you've given, considering how negative they all are?

1. You can be wanted, but for the wrong reasons
2. Exploitation is simply one of these wrong reasons
3. Misunderstood often means you aim to do something good/strong...but end up looking to everyone like you did something bad/weak. This is very close in meaning to unappreciated only you can get "partial credit" being misunderstood. Although it still can get very nasty IE you could attempt to save someone's life but instead end up being known as a murderrer "because you were the only one there"...however "unappreciated" encompasses this because if you are misunderstood (in a bad way), you are also unappreciated (IE, in the example above, criminal status is not an appreciated status)

4. Out-of-place simply means odd, in my book. You can still get "partial credit" by being out-of-place but relevant in other ways IE choosing not to get married instead of marrying someone who uses you just to look "like a dignified member of society".

While its horrible to feel any of those feelings, I would say unwanted is the worst. Its the worst feeling in the world and can also make you feel, misunderstood, unappreciated, and out of place.

Seriously, listen to me dude, they are all pretty much the same. I don't see how you could pick one over the other cuz they all seem almost the same to me. They all relate and they all suck. If ur unwanted ur obviously misunderstood, unappreciated, exploited, and out of place, all at the same time. They all go together and hurt evenly.

Hard to choose one. I'd say it's misunderstood and exploited. I can live with the others to some extent.

I would say unappreciated. being appreciated gives us a sense of being and belonging. If there is no appreciation for the things that we do then that means that there is no love, no acceptance nothing worth having at all.
