I just found out that I'm pregnant today. I went to the doctors and he told me to take a parental vitamin that contains At Least 1mg of folic acid. When I went to get it from the pharmacy the pharmacist told me that 1mg is not enough and to take another 1mg pill with the parental vitamins that i'm already taking. Would it be bad to take 2mg of folic acid? How much folic acid do you take?

the person at the pharmacy is not your doctor--everyones body is different.
listen to what your doctor said-he prescriped you a prenatal vitamin right?
whichever one he prescribed is just right for you.

I was on the prima care am and pm dose vitamins.

otc prenatals have the correct dosage in every pill--but it's best for your doctor to prescribe the vitamin for you as they are best suited to your body

The standard amount of folic acid to take is 400 micrograms, which may be upped to 600 micrograms if you have had a nural tube issue with a previous pregnancy or if you have diabetes or some other medical conditions. 1 milligram is equal to 1000 micrograms, so you will be fine if your prenatal vitamin has 100 mg.

While it is probably not "bad" to take 2mg, there is no need and as another poster stated, it is a water soluble acid so it will do you no good...just give you expensive pee.

You can't take too much folic acid. It's water soluble, meaning that it won't build up in your tissues. If there's too much your body will excrete it. I wouldn't worry about taking more folic acid that's in your prenatal vitamin. I would worry about getting enough fruits and veggies in your diet. You get those vitamins you need from a good diet, in fact it's better than any synthetic vitamins which you get in most pills. You do need a lot of nutrients now for your baby's healthy development. Read about it online, just punch in diet for pregnancy, I'm sure you'll get what you need information wise by doing that.

Its definetly not bad to get 2 mg of folic acid, but studies have showed that 1 mg is enough to prevent spina bifida. If you decide to go with 2 mg, try not to add that many leafy vegetables because they content a lot of it, and then it my be a bit too much. Hope it helps and congratulations. Good luck

my mom tried to tell me more than 1 too, she had read it somewhere. But my Dr told me the prenatal vitamins had enough in it. I asked the Pharmacy too and they said the same thing.
