because it is a public website that can be edited by people who don't really know much about the topic.

Because anyone can change anything. They might only change it for an instant before it gets changed back by someone else, but you might be unlucky enough to get the wrong one.
Also some people might actually believe they're right, but not be. Or it might be such a small mistake no-one noticed it.
And sometimes what is accepted as true isn't the truth, so if you wanted to do an assignment on something and got what most people believed was true, it doesn't nessessarily mean its the real truth. If that makes sense. Yourt eacher might be one of those smart people that know the real truth.

Because the sources they got the information may not be credible. Pretty much anyone can fix/write it. I heard the other day that Wikipedia is trying to make it possible for the site to be used for school purposes. I got in trouble one semester for using that site as a source which was BS because I later find out there was a more "reliable" source just one down from the search engine.

All works must be cited by authoritative studies that have been published and scrutinized by authorities in the field ., these authorities notations can be checked by going and reading the material that has been left somewhere.
Wikipedia does not at all time give you verifiable notations. anyone can submit an article.

It's usually a reliable site, but you have to keep in mind that can edit the content. Just make sure to verify your findings with other sources.

Try Wikiversity - they are much more reliable. Everything has to be cited properly before it will be accepted. You couldn't call it perfect, but it's a big improvement.

Because it is a community driven rather than factual. At least that is what my professors say. We get docked points for using wikipedia.
