Metal give you better traction. It's easier to dig into the batter's box, get a good jump when you're stealing, and right yourself after fielding a ground ball in the hole. Since molded cleats don't dig into the dirt, you have a greater potential to slip.

When rules permit, I recommend metal cleats. Due to the potential for injuring the opposition, some leagues do not allow metal cleats. Check the rules before buying metal cleats.

Metal is much better for a player. the player will notice a big difference. however, metal takes some getting used to, so he must try walking around in them before using them in a game situation. it will also prepare him for the higher stages of baseball, where metal is always worn. My son being 14 and playing for a school team(actually, he is a pinch runner with exceptional speed) wears metal cleats and noticed a big difference on the basepaths when he started wearing them. 13 is a good age to introduce your son to metal cleats and prepare him for the more intense, more important stages of baseball to come.

Metal cleets give you alot more traction they actually dig into the ground. The only downside is that when you slide you cleets could get caught and you could get hurt, but if you know how to slide then thats not a problem. Plus molded cleets wear down over the season and become less helpful where metal cleets stay the same.

it has nothing to do with performance the cleats just last longer and help a lot more with the stop and go or traction while playing

The difference is probably not in performance, but in the durability of the product.
