Site optimization is not easy - there is no magic solution to plug in and make it work. However, there is several things you can do to improve your ranking:
Use the Google Webmaster Tools to submit more detailed information to Google. This will help them more accurately index your site according to the topics and terms that are most relevant. See https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/docs/en/about.html for details.
Make contacts. This can be difficult at first, but it is important. The only real way to move up in Google's ranks significantly is to have other websites more popular or "important" than yours, have links to your website. So if there are blogs or other sites of a similar topic to yours, or ones with a significant readership that would find your site interesting, and the person/people who run that site/blog think highly of your site, they will link to yours. Google will recognize this link as confirming your site as important, and move you up in the rankings.
Optimize your terms on your page. If you have your page and meta tags overloaded with terms, they dilute. Google will put less weight on a page with a wide array of different keywords than one that is heavily and clearly focused in specific areas.
Don't pay for SEO unless it is from a reliable firm. One good way to find out how reliable they are is to ask for detailed information on their SEO process (which they should willingly provide) and ask them what other SEO firms they would recommend working with. If they can't come up with any ones that look/sound good as well, avoid them. Don't pay for search engine submission - it is a waste of time and money. You can submit yourself to Google, Yahoo, MSN, and Ask yourself and that will cover 99.9% of web searches.

It's pretty simple, and won't cost you anything but your time. Here's how you do it.
First, check your meta tags. Make sure that they're general. For instance, if you're selling cat food, don't use the term "cat chow", as it is likely to get less hits. Use the more general terms.
Second, load them into your site and upload it to your server.
Third, submit the sites to the search engines to speed up the process. There are tons of free programs that will do it automatically (this is the part that the companies charge for). My suggestion is Web CEO (www.webceo.com).
Finally, wait. It's not an exact science, and one you'll be constantly working on. But the better you get at the three steps above, the more of an improvement you'll see in your search engine rankings.

It would have been helpful if you had posted a link to your site so that we could have a look at it and it's source code. SEO is a vast topic and with no information it's hard to give you advice, however have a look at this site to check your meta tags, keywords and density, site description etc. It's a free service and they also have a meta tag generator.
