In movies, a cameo is a special or guest appearance by a recognizable actor or actress in a brief scene or role. The term was first used by Michael Todd when he was filming the 1956 blockbuster, "Around the World in Eighty Days", and comes from a tiny picture or relief-portrait in a locket or piece of jewelry, in other words, a special something included in a work of art--
Over forty well-known stars made brief appearences in Todd's film, including Frank Sinatra, George Raft, Marlene Dietrich, Buster Keaton, Noel Coward, Hermoine Gingold, Peter Lorre and Ronald Colman.
An example of a cameo in a relatively recent film was in "The War of the Worlds"--at the end of the film, as Tom Cruise and his kids arrive at the home of his wife's parents, the actor and actress portraying the old couple are Gene Barry and Ann Robinson, the stars of the original 1953 version of the film.

Cameos in film are when a famous person stars, but not as a main character, usually a very small role, with 5-7 lines, or less.
