ok so last week i went to new york city. why is it so different there then the south, in the south if you bump into someone you say "oh sorry" or "excuse me" we talk to each other down here alot. people from the south seem to be more friendly. why is that? one of the guys that went with me opened a door for a women in NY and she was affended? why is that? is it our southern hospitality?

Being the Queen of the South, we do have that good ol' southern hospitality! We know how to treat people down here. New Yorkers are crowded together, alot of people live there, so I guess they would think people would rob them if they let them get too close or friendly.

People are so much busier in a place like New York City. They have more places to go; more things to do. And about the lady getting offended: She was probably a feminist who thought it was demeaning to practice good old-fashioned courtesy towards women.

well opening a door for a women would "affend" me because its sexist, like women need to have doors held open for them, like we're weak, submissive creatures...

Readers Digest once took a survey and it said that people in NY C were the most polite. they went around dropping papers, etc. in all cities.

in NYC, they had the most people picking up papers, holding doors open, etc.

but the NYC stereotype usually involves uppity, cold people so yeah.

combine12365: you make it sound like she was in the wrong...that man was treating women like they were different...it's kind of like "i need to help you, because you must be dainty and ladylike"
