I would suggest not worrying about the names until you have discovered a little more about each of the characters. Sit down and free write a couple of pages on each of your main characters and find out more of their personalities. What are their likes and dislikes? Strengths and weaknesses? Conflict comes much more naturally when you really know who your characters are.

Once you know what kind of people they are, I'd suggest checking out a directory of baby names and browsing until you find fitting names. Here's one site I like:

Editted to add:
When I suggest finding out who they are, really dig deep. Even if details don't end up in your story, it will make it richer if you know more. What are their family's cultural backgrounds? What are their biggest faults? What do they do when they are happy/sad/angry/frustrated?

Here's some character worksheets to help you get started:

I like to write a few pages as the character when I begin a new writing project, to help get a sense of their voice.

There is plenty of time for names - you dont really seem to know very much about these people or about the plot for the story yet. My suggestion is to start with some brainstorming - just writing down all kinds of ideas no matter how silly they sound - then try putting some of them into a cohesive plot. Remember there are always subplots. Nobody has just one thing going on in their life at a time! When you have some sort of a plot, outline it. Then start doing character analysis and studies. THEN you can worry about names. You can just go to baby name sites or get yourself a baby name book. I have Anne Geddes Baby Names beside my computer all the time. I like to choose names that have meanings that suit my characters. Other people use credits from movies to choose names, obits, almost anything. You can even get the census office list of most common surnames in the US to ponder. Right now, names are the least of your problems. Good luck- Pax - C.

No offense, but this has been done a million times.

As far as names go, check babynames.com and other baby name sites and books. There are also great resources like this book called "Building Believable Characters" for working on the characters.

Good luck!

Get a baby names book. They tell you what the names mean so you can match up you character's personality.
