Man, sad state of affairs. We have a government that can't DO anything. And no one seams to disagree, generally.

Right on Chi. Without Republicans, the Democrats are nearly worthless in the majority, with a Republican President.

Bad situation, for all of us.

The Democrats need to stop doing whatever they can to be "not-Republicans" and get back to the business of rationally and responsibly trying to represent the American people.

If they do that and stop simply operating on the idea "If Republicans support it, we're going to try and stop it." and substitute "This is what the situation is, we think it would be better to do it this way because we believe 'reason X'. Let's talk about how to get this done." things are more likely to happen.

Otherwise, we get partisan-wars until someone gets a real majority again.

Sure, they can use the veto against the Republicans in the election. Those Republicans in Congress will also feel the heat from voters who elected Democrats because they want to end the war. If the Republicans are in the way of that desire they should pay the political price at the ballot box. Don't you think the Congressional Democrats don't know that. It is a brilliant strategy.

I see a landslide victory like 1964 when Lyndon Johnson defeated Barry Goldwater by a landslide and more Democrats were ushered into Congressional seats in both chambers.

Alone, No. They would have to rely on the help of the Republicans and when you have a bill that contains as much pork spending as the one today did you will not get that help under any circumstances. Then again why would we want the democrats to accomplish anything all they did was lie to get in power and now they are doing all the things they promised they would fix, but then if you expected different you have a lot to learn about power greedy lying democrats.

Their only hope (post veto) is to swing some republicans their way.

Due to the losses in the last elections, more republican reps are likely to drift away from Bush barring some miraculous good news occurs in Bush's favor.

If I were a Dem, I'd start the the talking point(s) "Bush's my way or the highway policy is hurting America". Dems are not to swift about coming up with catchy phrases that are easy to remember.

Nope, they will not get enough support to override. They will have to pass a new bill.......without the withdrawal date provision, or try to up the ante of bribes.
