To find the free space, go to My Computer, right click on Disk C, and select properties. This will give you a pie chart, as well as the specific amount, of how much data is used/free.
Defragmenting is really a slow process, but it does help to "archive and store" your data more efficiently. Personally, I start defragmenting at night, and when I wake up, it is done. Go to All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and click Defragment Disk. Select disk C, it is the main one or only one) on your computer.
*Note: This is all based on a Windows operating program.

You would start by opening your My Computer icon (are you running Windows XP??). This is located on the start menu by default. Once in here, you can right click on each hard drive (C:, D:, etc.) and click properties. This will give you a pie chart of total space versus free/used.

On a PC - go to My computer - then the drive you want to check and just kind a hover on the icon. A window should pop up showing the drive and the amount of free space on it.

Open up "My Computer", right-click on the drive you want to check, and left-click on "Properties". A Pie chart will come up telling you everything.

You can use either WINDOWS or DOS for this info.
In Windows, simply look in your taskbar at the bottom of your screen, where this sould be listed.
Using DOS, get out of the system, into your master drive C:\
Type "mem" and enter.
This ^ shold list your memories (RAM and Drive speed.)
