The eagle appeared twice. First time directly after mother died at the lake house. I was down on the dock and it flew down on a very low branch in my direct eyesight and sat looking at me. I was thinking about my mom at the time. The second time was the day we prepared to scatter her ashes at the lake. The eagle flew down low and landed on top of the boat house and stared at me. He stayed and watched while we scattered her ashes and didn't leave until we left. I have not been able to get this eagle off of my mind. Is there any folklore, or spiritual Native American belief that would come to mind?

I am a Native woman.

There is a simple answer to your question.

Eagles are messengers. Mostly they bring their blessings.
The Eagle was there to provide support, to provide blessings for you. It is an honor that this happened. Know that you were doing the right thing, that you are not alone, that your mother is well.

Each tribe has their own beliefs. You can always do research online to find out more information. You can always call a tribe and ask for information.

The Hindu religion has long since believed that a person can be reincarnated thus become a different animal depending on how well you lived your previous life. In Christianity, it is not called reincarnation, but Jesus rose again in a glorified state, before he ascended up to heaven. I do not know your mother, but I can tell you an eagle is a majestic looking bird that can fly as high as ten thousand feet. It is a bird of prey, that believes in taking care of it's off springs. An eagle will mark it's territory in the air, and if you come within range weather you are a para-glider, another bird and in some cases a fox, it will attack you with strong leather like talons as long as your fingers. Eagles have been known to tuck their wings and dive into it's prey at a rate of 100mph, and then it spreads it's vast wings, sometimes as much as 8' in length and the feathers catch the wind and with uncommon agility and breathtaking speed, it will then take an updraft, flap it's mighty wings once or twice and glide away on the air currents. I do not know if this helps you in understanding what you saw in the eagle, but it could have been as simple as your mother letting you know she is fine. She is now free to fly, and whatever ailed her before, it too has passed away. Peace.

I am metis. I am uncultured. The only thing I know about birds is as my cree grandma always told me that if one flies in your house, someone you love is going to die soon. I knwo the raven means death.
I love your story. Its beautiful. I like how oberservant and openminded you are. I have suffered a lot of loss in my life over the last few years, and I am catching on to things like that. There was a fire burning in the distance when i buried my dad, and that afternoon, I sen a whisp of smoke out of no where. After my aunt (second mother) died who was the "cat lady" with 5 of her own, cats started apperaring repeatedly to everyone close to her. I cannot explain any kind of these happenings, but I love them. Since experiencingabout 5 deaths of close relatives in the last 4 years, small things like that happen all the time. It has made me a strong believer in spirits and whatnot.
You beleive what you want to beleive. If I were you, I would appreciate an eagle every time I seen it, and just know you mom is with you. (the expression of watching you like a hawk comes to mind).
You may want to get off answers and locate an aboriginal elder. Im not sure, they may laugh at you (I assume your white) however, I think it is respectful of you to acknowlede native culture as a resource. IF you go to an elder, make sure to bring tobbacco as an offereing of payment for their troubles. Any tobacco will do, a pack, or a pouch.
I wish you well in your time of loss.

Honey! Sorry for you loss of your Mother on this Plain.Know that she's well now. The ills of this world have left her. She's happy but so much to learn. She's with loved ones and her guides. This was told me as I read your question.Feel very priveledged. The Eagle(spotted) (although we do count the Bald Eagle as special too.) is the messenger of the Spiritual plain. with it coming the times it did it was letting you know both times from the Spirit plain
that all is well and not to worry about her. The Eagle will pass your way from time to time in years to come.If you would like to know what other creatures mean in Native american folk law. You can buy a book that tells you from Native American shops.
May you learn more of these special messages. Ciao Lynda

Several Indigenous cultures believe that birds are carriers of messages to or from the dead. Also, Mexican Indians believe that birds for tell the death of someone by appearing in or near the dying ones' home.I have had numerous experiences with birds and I believe what you experienced was special and known only to you.
Good luck

I don't know about it being Native American, but a lot of cultures believe in spirits watching over you or in the reincarnation of souls....
