Yes defragmentation does help speed up your computer by grouping fragment of files and programs together so that it is easier for them to be retrieve from the hard drive.
If your hard drive is small, then it might be harder to defrag your hard drive with only 13% free space. Usually in my experience defragging is easier with 20 % free space.
I've including the wiki article on this subject.
Any way defragging shouldn't hurt your computer and could help. It will take a while to do, so you may want to start defragging before you go to bed.

I believe what you are seeing is the recovery partition that comes standard on most newer computers. On this drive, defragmentation is not desired, because the only time it is ever used is during an OS restore or creation of recovery discs. Defragmenting drive C:, however, can prove beneficial when done regularly (once a month or so). What happens to the files, basically, is they get spread out across the hard drive & your computer has to spend time spinning the hard drive around and tracking down the individual fragments (each one points to the next, and so on). If they file is contiguous, then the CPU doesn't have to spend the extra time in getting to the next section of the file, because it'll be right there. This also means less spinning of the drive in the long run, which can mean extra life for it.

Defraging your drive can increase performance and may even extend the life of the drive. But having only 13% free space may keep it from being able to defrag the drive.

All Defragging does is re organize your hard drive so everything starts faster. It doesn't Affect your free space. To do a proper defrag you may have to make more free space on your hard drive before it will work. Try deleting some programs and emptying your recycling folder.

Depends what you have 13% of if you have a huge drive its ok I defrag mine about once every fortnight as I load and remove lots of files I do notice the differance when it needs doing as it starts to feel "slushy" ! if that is a good description so in my opinion a well defraged drive is better ! Perhaps you should delete some stuff from your machine and then give it a good defrag after !!!!!!!!

What deframenting your computer does (which you don't need to do on a Mac) is sorts the information stored on your hard disk along with the free space. It sorts the information in such a way that it's neat for your system to located the files it's looking for more because everything is in it's proper place running your machine efficiently. As far as the 13% of open space. That really depends on exactly how big your hard drive is.

defragmenting a disk will help the computer performance since it will read and write files faster.
It is not very noticable if you are opening relatively small files like letters , spreadsheets or photos.
I would look at what is on drive c and drive d and see if there are any files that could be backup to cd or dvd and removed.

Hmmm.
Disk defragmentation is a necessary tool. We recommend it you run it at least once a month. The free space, has nothing to do with disk defragmentor. Disk Cleanup is what you need to run to free disk space. Then run disk defrag.
Good Luck!
