I made a cute one by putting plastic wrap over a basketball, then papier mache over that. It has to dry for 8 hours before you can wear it. Just cut away the plastic that hangs down. Leave the rest on as a coating inside.

you can get basic hat patterns at Joanns from all the pattern books, then you just start branching out with decoration etc.

if you know how to crochet i guess you could use plastic shopping bags insted of a heavy weight yarn with your favorite pattern...here's a link to a site i found today about makeing plastic bag "yarn"
