Usually if you go to Google or Yahoo there is a page where you can register your site for free. This is also true for other search engines. Also, if there is a website already on Google that has a link to your site, most likely your page is already indexed because of spider programs that search for webpages and all links on webpages (that's how you get spam in your inbox if you put your e-mail on a web page).
