I keep getting these explorer errors whenever I do the simplest Windows commands and I want to reinstall windows.......

I've never had to erase the entire drive and reinstall win98, and I've never had to simply reinstall windows.

I understand I won't lose my files if I reinstall windows although I have backed everything up just in case.

Is there any advantage to doing a clean reinstall?
So which should I do? thanks for your expertise.

well i think that since you have backed up everything, you could reformat it. That way it will wipe out everything on the hard drive. Of course it will fix your problem, and it will get rid of any other things that your computer is having problems with. Hope i helped.

A clean install is your best bet. If you dig deep enough on "windows" site, you'll find that they recommend reformatting/re-installing every 6 months. I do not know if this is true of the newer versions, as many of us (within a private MS community) have kept a log of "length of install" on XP and now Vista.

Hopefully, you have back-ups of ALL the updates.

I know you have your reasons for using win98 (I have a copy on a box also) But, I would highly recommend upgrading to XP at the very least. It's not 100% perfect....but compared to 98 it's the diff between a Ford Pinto and a Ferrari

You can reinstall (read Repair) and still have the same problem. Plus as an extra added attraction you get to spend hours downloading updates from Windows Update (if W98 is still supported by Win Update, been so long).
A Clean install is the way to go, and depending on your hardware, UUUCH, update to xp. Heaven forbid that you should consider the latest play pretty from Brother Bill, vista.

Windows Explorer is the devils own program and it totally suc*s but Windows won't work without it. If you are having trouble with it I would start with a clean install but that's me. It's not true that all of your programs and files will be saved if you just reinstall you OS, many times quite a few of your programs won't run. It all has to do with the address on the HD that they reference from.

one million) Backup any substantial documents (to CD, yet another no longer hassle-free stress, or yet another computing gadget) 2) Boot up the computing gadget with the residing house windows XP installation media. 3) % to delete the present C: stress partition 4) Create a clean C: stress partition 5) set up residing house windows XP to the partition This effectively wipes the stress (a minimum of effectively adequate for a typical consumer) for a clean installation. It would not thoroughly sparkling the stress as low point report restoration application nonetheless has of venture to recuperate documents. To do a low point wipe, look at utilities that write 0's, one million's, and random kinds to the disk.

Doing a clean install to a freshly formatted drive is best!!
If you merely re-install over the top, the registry is not wiped out and rebuilt - and that's most likely the cause of all your problems. If, after a clean install you still have problems, memory is the next thing to look at.
If you do the re-install, be sure to have all device drivers (chipset, video, sound, modem, printer, etc.) handy BEFORE you begin!

Sometimes traces of files, such as viruses, etc. still want to mess with your computer if you don't do a total erase. What I would reccomend doing is erase, reformat, reinstall. this should make your computer feel nice new and new improved trust me it will feel good. p.s. also make sure to be careful that files your putting back on your computer aren't infected with viruses and/or spyware.

I would just go to the Control Panel and under System run a system restore to a previous date.
