Any brand name oil will do, as long as you change it regularly. My trusted Mercedes mechanic recommends 4000 to 5000 mile interval between changes.
Of course, synthetic oil is better (and it is "a must" for newer models) but for a 1992 car - regular motor oil is fine.

Gas or Diesel? 15W-40 Diesel-graded oil (Shell Rotella, Mobil Delvac, Cheveron Velo) for Diesels. For gassers, you can use any name brand of 10W-40, or you could use 0W-40 Mobil 1 synthetic. The only thing you should be careful of is to avoid store branded or bargain branded oils, which are sometimes of suspicious quality.

I would go for an oil that is formulated for older engines with high miles. I would go with a 5W-30.

Depends on the part of the country you live in. I use 5W30 in my '95 E-Class gasoline engine.
