The use of eagles representing countries dates back to ancient times. An eagle was often seen as a messenger between the gods and mankind since it has the ability to fly higher and nearer to the gods. The ancient Greeks believed that if an eagle was flying over the battlefield it meant that the gods favored them. The US adapted the eagle as a symbol because of the link with the ancient Greeks and democracy. Benjamin Franklin wanted to have the turkey as the US symbol!

The original official bird of the United States was supposed to be the wild turkey...no joke. So why do you think they went with the eagle instead?
