It all depends on what type of music you listen to and what you want to be able to play. I started out with an electric guitar, but I know people who have started out with acoustics.

Start with an inexpensive acoustic guitar.
Learning the guitar is difficult. Starting with acoustic has many advantages. It is cheaper and you do not have to have an amplifier. If you don't spend a lot on your first guitar you won't be to upset when you scratch it. You WILL scratch it, your picking will be sloppy. Also, if you get frustrated and give up, you will not have that much money invested in it.
When you learn to play acoustic, you are learning to play guitar, any guitar, and it makes you a better guitar player. If you had start on electric it is much harder to understand that.
Learning the guitar is not so easy. Something guitar-like that is very easy to learn is the Baritone Ukulele. It is like a guitar that is missing 2 strings. Baritone uke chords are the same or similar to guitar chords, but much easier to play. The nylon strings are easy on the fingers, yet will still toughen your fingertips. What would take months to learn on the guitar would take a few weeks to learn on the baritone uke. So if you start with the baritone uke, and then jumped to acoustic guitar you would get ahead much faster. If you can't master the baritone uke, there is not much hope of learning the guitar.
Whatever you start with, be sure and get yourself a good electronic tuner. It is nearly impossible to learn to play an instrument that isn't in tune.I always recommend the Korg CA-30. It's very easy to use, and will tune just about any instrument to any tuning (indispensible for tuning the guitar to aternate tunings).
Good Luck
Just so you know you don't need any special guitar to play any type of music. If you want to rock, you can rock an acoustic. You can even rock a baritone ukulele!

I play the electric guitar, and have for 10 years now. I just started on electric with a private teacher. It's pretty easy to grasp the concept, at least it was for me.

I think it really depends on what type of music you want to play. I play metal music, so I started with an electric guitar! :D
But, acoustics do tend to be cheaper!
PS- Wal-Mart First Act guitars are NOT worth spending money on! They're super cheap and don't stay in tune! :D

well it all depends on what you want to play.
but i will say that if you start on acoustic, you can easily switch to electric and play anything. acoustic strings are harder to hold down so you will build up hand strength and calluses quicker. if you start on electric, you have to really get used to holding down the strings harder if you switch to acoustic. so i'd say if you plan on playing both, start with acoustic. if you're a punk rocker who will never touch an acoustic otherwise, dont even bother with one and just start with an electric

If you like electric then start there. If you get an acoustic and like the electric you won't be happy.
