To preserve the Union. The South seceded as it felt the election of the Republican Lincoln would let the federal government dictate policies such as slavery that the Southern states believed was their right to legislate. South Carolina had previously tried a policy of nullification, where they believed that any law passed by the federal government that they didn't agree with, they did not have to enforce.
The South ended up losing, and in the process states' rights pretty much died. While they tried to fight for states' rights under the wrong premise of slavery, the principle of the rights of the states, and more importantly that of the people, is still a solid one. Not only slavery ended in 1865; any notion that the Tenth Amendment is still valid ended as well, as the federal government has done everything in its power, under Republicans and Democrats, to violate the principles of limited government.

Slavery was part of the reason for the civil war. The other reason was there was two different government body at that time (Two President one for the south and the north). There was two currency, ideal how the country should be run, the south wouldn't do what the north tell them and the other way around, and south wouldn't give up there manual labors to work the crops. Because they will go broke!

It was about states rights and the right of the south to not have their economy dictated by the north. The south wanted more states rights, (conservative) and most were conservatives, and the north wanted to be able to dictate their economy the same way the north's economy is dictated even though it was a completely different economy
