its hard to say because defenders defend different areas and players depending on position and sizes.
personally i think marion is a very underated defender. averaging 2 thefts and over a block per game for a guy who is 6'7 playing PF is VERY good.
josh smith is another athletic player who uses his long arms and athleticism to get rebounds, blocks and steals.
in terms of one on one making your life miserable. i would say Bruce Bowen is a solid perimeter defender (albeit dirty), Artest is good too, using his size and strength well.
in the post, shaq because of his strength and ability to hold his own.
kobe is a solid defender, he routinely gets the task of staying with opposing stars. he doesnt shut them down, but he doesnt back off from the challenge. hes a good - not a great - defender

You guys look at the stars but what about the real defender.before i start that guy varejo is not close to being the best defender.it all goes down to Shane Battier or Bruce Bowen, this is why. Although Shane battier has never made a defensive team is has the reputaion of a good defender.Shane battier is leading the nba in charges(not varejo)always defends the toughfest team on the other team(dirk nowitski,dwayne wade,gilbert arenas),and even coaches on other teams say his one of the best defenders(which is weird coaches pic whos on the defensive team). he also won 2 defensive player of the year awards in college.thats why the rockets are top 5 in every defensive category including #1 in about 4. And Bruce Bowen is a good defender mostly a perimeter defender.

Ron Artest is the best defender he can guard all different kinds of players no matter what. He held kobe to 5 points in a game once and yes kobe is a very good defender and doesnt get enough credit for his D.

Kobe is an above-average defender, but my vote goes to Bruce Bowen of the Spurs and Ben Wallace (when he was still with the pistons)

Kobe is an outstanding defender. When the coach asks him to shut someone down they get shut down.

Kobe is the worst defender PERIOD! Bowen is a flopper and Big Ben lifts crazy weights in the gym and takes charges all day and doesn't do anything.

the best stealer in the nba are kobe and a.i alen iverson. the best shot blocker is yao and shaq but he getting old.
