Here's the dela poeple, I have been living with my mother for the past year to save up money. I don't especially enjoy living with my mother, I am 42 years old and am an adult and want to get back on my own. I want to go back to school and staying here would help me pay tuition, but the price I pay is my freedom.

The other part is going back to Florida where I lived for fifteen years. There, I have been accepted into UCF and Rollins College. With UCF however, I was classified out of state because I lived in california for the year. with Rollins, it's private and I have the money, but am not superthrilled with the program even though it does lead to a MAsters in Liberal Arts and I could still teach and write and do non profit work. I would also be working full time while going to school.

So what should I do? stay with mom, in her house with her rules and guilt trips, but not incur a debt with tuition or go back to school in Florida where my friends and life was?

I would do whatever would be best for the future. Bite whatever bullet you have to so your future is what you want most.

I can identify, because of my own situation. But hey, if you're doing school and working as well... how much freedom will you really have anyway??? Or... time to enjoy any freedom you might have??

I say stick it out there and save some money, then after you get your master's, you can do your own thing. You'll be so busy with school and work and writing papers, researching in the library, etc., you won't have much time to notice where you live, anyway. You know what I mean.

Honestly, my first year back home was pure misery. I was in my mid-forties, too, and very used to doing my own thing. My Mom was treating me like I was 12, and it was pretty awful. In my case, there was a lot of "nuclear fallout" from the things that had been going on in my life that led me to the decision to move back home in the first place.

It's gotten easier, and she's accepting me more as an adult and friend, confidant and general "interpreter" of legal documents and strangely worded sales letters and bills.

So hang in there, the first few months is the time when we sort out our roles and deal with expectations. Once you get into the routine of school and so on, it'll be great to have Mom's help with cooking, cleaning, and laundry. She'll begin to see you as an adult (well, more-so, you know) and get used to the idea of your not being around so much, too. Then when the time comes for you to spread your wings again, you'll both be ready.

Good luck with everything. I hope your educational and life goals are easily reached.

You are 42 and you can not decide this on your own??

If you have enough money to go to Rollins which would cost you over $30K+ a year, can you not choose UCF and live on your own?

Which school you should go depends on the degree you are seeking. Around here, you can do no better than Rollins if you are looking for a liberal arts degree.

If you are working full time, are you talking about Holt School (within Rollins) which is significantly less expensive at 1200 dollars a class.

Go to Rollins--it is a great school. You will be furthering yourself both personally and academically if you move back to Florida. And after being at Rollins for a year, you could always transfer to UCF if that's where you really want to be (and you'll be considered an in-state student).

Momma's just gonna shrink your cage down till you suffocate if you stay there. If you've got a chance to get out, do it!

You can probably go to Rollins, and then head off to UCF the next year. Most of the classes should transfer.

Well, staying home won't do justice for you. You can learn alot more by being on your own so I say go to where you want to attend and live with some friends. By being on your own, you know how to take care of yourself, enjoy your time with friends, and maybe even meet the girl of your dreams at school.

Staying home will limit your freedom and you won't personally
won't grow as much. Don't worry about the money issue now.
Just enjoy and worry about money after you finish school when you make much more money.

Good luck!

if you are really 42, i don't know because at this point any sane person would know to leave his mommy's house, then just go to college in Florida. UCF is a really good school. I want to go there or UF (if i get in ) liberal arts huh? well I mean its a good degree but its not very practical is it?

You should go and take the chance down in Florida. I'll be very frank you won't know unless you try. You can always come running home for help. Although, you could just find a college closer if you really wanted to.

Dude you're 42 years old and still living with mom? It must be the cooking. On the other hand you sound like you're educated but you can't make a living to support yourself? What's really going on? I think you answered your own question in the last sentence.

Saving money is always good but your sanity may be more important.

I say Florida, live for another year before applying, to lessen out of state tuition.

Ultimately wherever you are the happiest is going to be the best for you. Even though you will incur debt going back to Florida it is just money.
