in the past it was ok since everything was close to home but since we have cars and buses things are made further apart which makes having a car a need. you would have to rely on finding a job in your town when having a car and finding a job 20 miles away would make you 3 times the money.

I could manage with oil lamps and a fireplace. But, would feel cold all the time. I'd miss my furnace a LOT!
No car would be okay, except we're 15 miles from the nearest big store. Would have to make do with the overpriced general store we have in our little town. 1 mile from me. I could walk it. Pull a wagon with my groceries.
I'm not even sure the general store would stay open. They have computerized cash drawers, and need their central heating.

Yeah unless you want to be walking because some of us live in communities that are pretty far away from the access of public transportation and unless you want to walk your groceries or large scale packages home. A car is a necessity at this point.

I don't see why not. It's not as if our ancestors were dumb, they just hadn't invented the things we take for granted today, that's all.
Actually, I wouldn't mind living like that, it would be very hard work, but we all lead such sedentary lives now, that we could use some good old fashioned work to keep us healthy.
