Hi! I have a 2000 Z28 with an Automatic. I'd like to know how to figure out what could be making this Rattling/Knocking noise in my Rear Differential. Its a Posi-Trac (Limited-Slip), and it makes this noise when I make Turns, and sometimes when I let-off the Throttle. I know that this Noise is not normal.

I have put my Z28 on Jack-Stands, and turned the Rear Wheels. I found that if I Jerk either of the Rear Wheels back & forth, I can make this Knocking/Rattle noise.

I changed the Rear-End Fluid last Fall. It made this noise before & after I changed the Fluid.

Change the rear end grease and add a bottle of limited slip additive. May take care of the problem.

A common mistake is that the wrong fluid was added to the diff., causing excess heating & premature failure to the clutch plates. Traction Lock diffs require a Posi Trac 80W 90 Gear Lube.

Remove the inspection cover & check the condition of the spider & axle gears. Stick your finger in the base & feel for pieces of clutch packs.
