My PC boots and then in an instant it is silent again

The hard disk lights up when I boot but then in 0.1 second everything stops

What could be the problem?

Thanks in advance

Sheetal ... It seems your PC is barely starting the POST, power-on and self-test. I tend to think there's a major hardware malfunction such as a short (not likely unless you've recently been messing around inside), an overloaded power supply, or a dying/dead power supply. They do sometimes fail.

Good luck.

What comes up on the monitor when this happens? Does a Dell logo (or whatever brand PC it is) come up on the screen indicating something is loading (a status bar for example)? How far does it get? Are there any beeps? All of these things could be crucial for diagnosing a problem.

After reading a few more responses I would like to add to mine as well. By the computer going silent what do you mean? The system completely shuts off? Which would then make sense to indicate the power supply is going or something is up with the motherboard. The video card and RAM would at least allow the PC to stay on.

Note: Before reading on you must be sure to becareful around the computer's hardware. If caution is not taken things can get shocked which can definitely result in a dead PC.

If you are confident enough, you could test the power supply.
1) Find a paper clip
2) Open the case and disconnect everything but the fans
3) There should be one very large connector with 20 or 24 pins. When this is located insert one end of the paper clip into the slot with the green wire and the other into a slot with a black wire. Turn on or plug in the power supply to the wall and if the power supply turns on the fans you know it atleast has some juice left.

I agree with the person who mentioned the power supply which could be the problem, but the other major problem could and might most likely be the motherboard that fried, which i am afraid means either getting a new motherboard or getting a complete new system.

Seems like the PC is having a problem loading the operating system. You could also try resetting your CMOS, if you know what you are doing, which you probably don't. If you aren't familiar with your computers insides, then I wouldn't mess around in there too much.

go through following steps....you get the solution..!

check the bios...! and try to set the bios default mode. (if you know)

Check your computer SMPS fan and CPU cooler fans. Whether the fans are working well? Sometime the fans are not working means the CPU environment get too hot means the computer peripherals makes mall functions. It can create these kinds of problems.

Then Try to Your Operating System
And also check your windows is getting corrupted. In this case you try to recover the OS through OS installation CD. Otherwise reinstall it. In this case any virus problems are
solved by it.

go through these....after that tell me ..!
