Traditional imperialism takes place where an aggressive country takes over a weaker country and imposes a friendly government usually for economic or strategic gain.
USA/Britain - Iraq
Iran - Iraq
Russia - Chechnya
China - Tibet
Neo-imperialism is much more subtle and occurs when powerful nations takeover the economy of poorer nations through multinational corporations and restrictive trade practises. e.g. Only importing raw materials and selling manufactured goods. This form of imperialism can be seen in most developed nations impacting on the third world.

Iraq, in a way.

The U.S. has conquered a sovereign nation (whose leader, admittedly, was a real monster), is trying to establish a new government that is friendly to our interests in the region, and has plans to continue its influence in the area indefinitely.

It reminds me a little of the 1895 takeover of the Hawaiian Islands and the deposing of Queen Liliuokalani. American business interests, backed up by the American military, forced her to step down because she stood in the way of the Americans' money-making plans. Hawaii became a U.S. possession, then a territory, then a state.
